YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team split a Sunday doubleheader at Young Harris, falling in game one, 4-3, before winning the second game, 8-4.

GAME ONE
Alishia Frierson got the Nighthawks on the board in the top of the first inning with the bases loaded with a double that scored three UNG runs to put North Georgia up, 3-0. Young Harris, however, started battling back, starting with a two-run homer by Haylie Shope in the third inning to cut the lead to just one.

Young Harris won the game in the fifth inning, scoring two more runs. The first came on a RBI double by Georgia Webb before the Mountain Lions got the game-winning run across on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.

Kylee Smith (22-1) was tagged with her first loss of the season, giving up four runs in four innings of work. She struck out just two YHC batters in the process.

GAME TWO
Young Harris took the lead early in the second game of the day with back-to-back RBI doubles in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

North Georgia answered in the top of the third with a four-run frame, highlighted by Frierson’s two-RBI single to score the final runs of the inning.

Leading 4-2, the Nighthawks added four more in the seventh, starting with a two-RBI triple from Lexi Duncan before Sydney Sprague singled to score two more for UNG with two outs. YHC scratched two more runs across in the final frame, but the Nighthawks held on for the win.

Amber Johns (15-0) earned the win, throwing six innings and giving up the four Mountain Lion runs.

NOTES
– Frierson finished 3-for-7 on the day with five RBI to lead UNG at the plate.

– With the win in game two, North Georgia becomes the first team to clinch a spot in the Peach Belt Conference tournament to be hosted in Dahlonega May 4-5.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will take on Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday, April 10, at the Hill. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
