Longstreet Bridge construction, U.Highway 129 North of Gainesville

(GAINESVILLE)- Motorist traveling south to Gainesville on US Highway 129 need to take note of special road construction this week.  (GDOT)

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced Monday  (9/9) they will  implement a daytime single lane closure on State Route 11/US 129, north of Gainesville at the East Fork Little River Bridge project this week. A GDOT release said lane closures will begin on Tuesday (9/10)  and continue through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. between Lakeview Drive and Lawson Drive. That’s the second bridge north of Gainesville.

Also at midnight Monday night  (9/9) a single lane closure will be in effect on State Route 11/US 129  north of Gainesville over the Chattahoochee River until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.  This overnight lane closure will allow crews to continue pouring on the new bridge’s driving surface.

Tuesday (9/10)  morning at  10 a.m. crews will shift traffic approaching the Longstreet Bridge to the newly paved lanes.

  • Southbound traffic will shift over to the left
  • Northbound traffic will shift over to the right

This shift will guide traffic to the newly constructed lanes and back on to the current Longstreet Bridge until late December 2019 when the new Longstreet Bridge structure will be opened to traffic. Traffic has to be shifted to the new lanes to safety allow crews to construct two of the remaining retaining walls.

GDOT officials urge motorist to  drive alert while navigating through this work zone.
