(ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.) – The Piedmont men’s golf team wrapped up play on Sunday at the Jekyll Island Collegiate in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Freshman Doug Gugel stood out on Sunday, leading the squad with a round of 4-over 75 that included a team-high three birdies on the day. Beginning his day on hole No. 10, Gugel went out in 37 and came home in 38 for his best round of the tournament.

After posting rounds of 305 and 297 on Friday and Saturday, the Lions slipped on Sunday with a 316 team score, falling to 25th on the team leaderboard.

One day after a season-low round of 74, Connor Lane carded an 8-over 79, good for second best on the team Sunday and the only other Piedmont round in the 70’s.

Adam Rogers delivered his second 80 of the week, making one birdie in his final round.

Veterans Josh Hebrink (82) and Eric Penland (86) also delivered rounds in the 80’s to close out the tournament.

Oglethorpe held off Carnegie Mellon to win the individual title, finishing at 18-over par as a team for the week over 54 holes. Rhodes College’s Avery Stansell won the individual title, with a final round 69 giving him a 4-under score for the week and a two-shot victory.

Up next, the Lions will tee it up next at the Wynlakes Invitational, beginning Monday, May 1 in Montgomery, Alabama.
