DAHLONEGA – Cade Heil threw just 82 pitches as the University of North Georgia’s baseball team defeated the Young Harris Mountain Lions in game one of the three-game Battle of Blood Mountain series, 4-2, Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium.

A battle between the mounds, Heil and Young Harris’s Matthew Livingston saw 19 up and 19 down until the top of the fourth frame when YHC got the first hit of the contest, but UNG was first to get runs on the board in the bottom of the frame.

Josh Profit put the Nighthawks on the board first with a solo shot over the right field wall, his first of the season, to get the hot Nighthawk bats going. Chase Sudduth added to the rally with a double to right, followed by a RBI single from Andres Perez to put UNG up, 2-0.

William Mapes tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with a RBI blast through the right side to score Steven Tomlinsonwho reached on a walk. Heil kept the Mountain Lions scoreless in the sixth, but YHC retaliated in the seventh with a solo homer over left from Rudy Gaona to put pressure on UNG, 3-1. Mapes responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot of his own to get it back for the Nighthawks, 4-1.

Young Harris came back again in the eight with a Tyler Washington double to right, boarding a base runner for the Mountain Lions for Corley Reynolds to blaze a RBI single down third base line to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Parker Morrisonentered the game for Heil to shut down the YHC hitting spree and end the game at 4-2 for UNG.

NOTES
– Mapes went 2-for-3 with a single, a homerun, one run scored and two RBI. Bill LeRoy went 2-for-4 with two singles. Profit went 1-for-2 with a homerun and one run scored. Perez went 1-for-4 with a single and one RBI.

– Heil (5-4) earned the win, while Livingston (4-2) was tabbed with the loss. Morrison earned his seventh save of the season, allowing just one walk in 1.2 innings.

North Georgia will continue the Peach Belt Conference series against Young Harris tomorrow at Bob Stein Stadium.
