We know a lot of you are concerned about the potential for severe weather for this afternoon and evening across north and central Georgia. Here are the details…

OVERVIEW / THREATS:

Two waves of thunderstorms will move across north and central Georgia today. The first wave is currently over southeastern Tennessee and this will move into extreme northeast Georgia around noon. The next wave will move into northwest Georgia early this afternoon and spread across the entire region through the afternoon and nighttime hours. Some of these storms are already producing wind gusts to over 40 mph across eastern Tennessee. As the storms move into Georgia instability will increase and could push a few of these storms above severe limits.

WHERE AND WHEN:

* North Georgia…Noon to Midnight

* Central Georgia…5 PM to 3 AM Wednesday

Selected Cities…

* Atlanta and Athens: 7 to 10 PM

* Macon and Columbus: 8 PM to Midnight

IMPACTS:

* Damaging Winds (although cannot rule out an isolated tornado)

* Frequent Lightning

* Locally 1 – 3 inches of rain from the stronger storms that could produce minor flooding of small streams and creeks, urban areas and low spots on roads

* Possibly large hail across north Georgia

CONFIDENCE:

* High confidence on coverage of thunderstorms

* Low on pinpointing location of severe storms

* Low on pinpointing location of localized heavy rainfall.
