(Cleveland)- A skunk that had contact with a dog north of Cleveland recently has tested positive for rabies.

White County Public Safety announced Thursday the incident happened in the Paradise Valley Road area off U.S. 129 North.

The skunk was shopped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur. On Wednesday, the lab notified White County Environmental Health that the animal tested positive for rabies, a social media post from White County Public Safety states.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the affected area where the skunk was located. Anyone who lives in that area and has concerns about of possible rabid animal exposure can contact White County Environmental Health at (706) 348-7698 during normal business hours.

Environmental Health officials encourage pet owners to make sure their animals are current on rabies vaccinations.
