(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Commissioners Monday gave official approval for the 2023 tax millage rates for the county.
The commissioners approved the county millage rate of 9.505 and the board of education rate of 13.175 mills, for a total millage rate for the year of 22.68 mills.
Jodi Ligon, Finance Director for the county in presenting the tax information said for a property owner with a $200,000 valued home the total estimated tax bill this year should be $1,814.
The approval of the millage rate followed a third public hearing held by the commission board. During Monday’s hearing ten different people made comments before the commission board most saying there needs to be something done to help ease the tax burden.
The assessed property value was highlighted as a big factor for the increase and Commission Chairman Travis Turner said there had been some talk from local legislators about possible legislation being introduced that would limit the amount tax assessors could increase property values. Turner urged the citizens to let their representatives know their feelings about this.
The Cleveland City Council voted Friday 4-0 to retain the current 5.056 millage rate for city taxpayers. Mayor Josh Turner, who does not vote unless there is a tie read a prepared statement before the vote expressing his opposition to retaining the current rate saying he was in favor of a full rollback of the tax rate.
