CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Georgia rifle team fired a team score of 2840 to win the team smallbore title and Nighthawks’
Dakota Spivey won the individual title and Smallbore Athlete of the Year honors on the first day of the Southern Conference Rifle Championship at The Citadel’s Inouye Marksmanship Center
on Saturday. North Georgia put all four of its scorers in the individual smallbore final, which featured the top eight shooters after three relays determined the team scores.
Spivey, a junior from Dahlonega, Georgia, claims the second consecutive smallbore title for North Georgia. Spivey’s teammate Conner won the award in 2017 with a score of 449.4; both were named first team All-SoCon in smallbore after Saturday’s results. Tobin Sanctuary and Ruthanne Conner also claimed first team All-SoCon nods with Sanctuary finishing in second place in the discipline while Conner finished fifth.
It was the Nighthawks’ Medina who led the field heading into the final, posting a 577 in the second relay. Sanctuary fired a 575 and Spivey a 571 to claim the top three spots heading into the final. Medina was named second team All-SoCon after his sixth place finish.
The tournament concludes Sunday with the air rifle competition. The SoCon will crown team air rifle and overall champions as well as an air rifle individual champion.
Sunday’s air rifle competition gets underway at 7:45 a.m. with preparation and sighting, followed by the first relay at 8:00.
