DAHLONEGA – Big innings for the No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team gave the Nighthawks a sweep of the first day of the Captain D’s Classic Saturday at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium. UNG defeated Coker, 14-1, before beating Tusculum, 8-0.

GAME ONE
North Georgia wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Shelby Hammontree‘s RBI single brought home the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Sydney Sprague kept the scoring going in the second inning on a RBI single before Marley Stowers earned an RBI on a groundout, making the score, 4-0.

The Nighthawks sent 12 batters to the plate in the third, gathering six singles and four walks in the inning. UNG put up seven runs in the inning, increasing the lead to 11-0. Coker scored one in the fourth inning off three straight singles, but UNG answered again with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by Brittany Gilliam‘s two-RBI single to cap the scoring.

Kylee Smith earned the win, going four innings with 11 strikeouts.

GAME TWO
After Sydney Sprague scored on a wild pitch in the first, the bats exploded again for a big inning in the second. Marley Stowers started things off with a grand slam, followed almost immediately by a solo bomb for Hammontree, giving UNG a 6-0 lead.

Hammontree hit another homer in the game, this one a two-run shot in the fourth inning, plating Kaylyn Anthony in the process to get to the 8-0 score.

Amber Johns earned the win in game two, pitching a four-hit shutout and retiring nine of the last 10 batters.

NOTES
– The Nighthawks are now 23-0 on the season.

– Coker and Tusculum both defeated Flagler in the other two games of the first day of the classic. The Cobras won 5-0 in the day’s first game, while the Pioneers claimed a 4-1 win over the Saints.

– Hammontree finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI.

The Nighthawks will finish the Captain D’s Classic tomorrow at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium, playing at 2 and 4 p.m.Action begins at 10 a.m. with Coker taking on Flagler.
