(DEMOREST, Ga.) – The Piedmont University softball team swept the Scots of Covenant early Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in CCS play. Piedmont narrowly bested the Scots in Game 1 while starter Taylor Spivey blanked the Scots in Game 2.

GAME 1 – Piedmont 5, Covenant 4

The Scots threatened early against Piedmont starter Megan Steinmeyer, opening the contest with three straight singles to load the bases. With the bases loaded and no one out, Steinmeyer got a ground ball back to herself that she fired home for the first out of the inning. She then struck out the next batter at the dish before catching a line drive back at her for the final out of the inning.

After working two scoreless innings on defense, the Lions offense posted the first runs of the game. Loading the bases in the second inning, a defensive mistake from the Scots allowed two Piedmont runs to cross.

Covenant responded in the next frame to take the lead. With two outs and a runner on, the Scots strung together three singles and a bases-clearing double to jump out to a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Lions once again leveled the contest. Sophomore Madi Cronic singled up the middle with two on and two out in the inning to level the contest. Piedmont threatened to score more in the inning but remained unable to break the tie until the bottom of the fourth. This time, Jasmine Lowery came through with two gone in the inning as she launched a double to right field that scored Kaitlin Isley from second to give Piedmont a 5-4 lead.

Finding her groove on the mound, Steinmeyer allowed just two hits over the next three frames as she closed the door on the 5-4 win.

GAME 2 – Piedmont 6, Covenant 0

Piedmont jumped out to the early lead in the first frame of Game 2 after a pair of early mistakes from the Scots. The Lions struck again in the second frame for a pair of runs. With runners on second and third, Kaitlin Isley singled to left to score both runners and give her team a 4-0 lead.

Standing strong in the circle, Piedmont starter Taylor Spivey continued to frustrate the Scots offense, holding them scoreless while the Piedmont offense looked to add more run support late in the contest. Posting a two-out single, Kennedy Votava reached third after a stolen base and an error from the Scots. Pinch hitter Bailey Davis took advantage of Votava’s work on the base paths, blasting an RBI double to right. The scoring was not done as Isley continued to rack up the RBI, singling up the middle and scoring the runner from second.

With a 6-0 lead in the final frame, Spivey completed the shut out, allowing 11 hits while striking out three.
