MILLEDGVILLE, Ga. | In a battle of top-10 teams, the No. 8 University of North Georgia softball team swept a pair of Peach Belt Conference games at 6
th-ranked Georgia College on Tuesday afternoon, winning 3-1 and 2-1. The wins stretch North Georgia’s winning streak to 14 games as the Nighthawks improve to 33-5 overall and remain perfect in league play at 14-0.
Courtney Poole earned both wins in the circle finishing the day with 14 innings pitched, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out 15 Bobcats. The junior improves to 27-1 on the season.
Game #1: North Georgia 3, Georgia College 1
In the opener, North Georgia would collect all the offense they would need with two runs in the team’s first frame courtesy of a two-RBI triple by Jessica Finch.
After GC cut the UNG lead in half in the bottom of the third, North Georgia added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Tiffanie Burns.
Meagan May and Meredith Heyer combined for five of the team’s seven hits in game one while Poole fanned eight in seven innings of work.
Game #2: North Georgia 2, Georgia College 1
The Nighthawks would strike first again in the second game, scoring a pair in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI triple by May. May finished the afternoon with hits in half of her eight at bats.
Heyer again led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 nightcap.
Down to their last out, the Bobcats would not go down without a fight in the seventh as a solo shot to left field cut the Nighthawk lead to 2-1.
Georgia College continued its two-out threat, putting two runners on before Poole was able to get out of the game and secure her 27th win of the year.
North Georgia returns to action on Friday, April 10 when USC Aiken comes to Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium for a 4:00 doubleheader.
