(Atlanta)-  The National Drought Mitigation Center’s latest map shows that White County continues to suffer from an “Extreme Drought”(D3)  level. The drought intensified this past  week to extreme (D3) and exceptional (D4) levels in much of northwest and middle Georgia.  In addition to White all or most of Union, Towns, Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, Banks, Hall and Lumpkin Counties are now in an “Extreme Drought” (D3) status.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division  issued a Level 1 Drought Response in 53 counties, including White County last month.

Reflecting the continued lack of rainfall, our river, lake and ground-water levels remain well below normal. The Chattahoochee River level at Helen is 0.24 ft which is 0.66 ft below normal (0.90 ft). The water level at Lake Lanier is 1062.69 ft. which is 8.31 ft below normal pool (1071.00 ft.)
