10-21-18

LAURINBURG, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2018) – The Truett McConnell University men’s soccer traveled to St. Andrews University for their last Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season game. The Bears (7-6-1, 3-6-1 AAC) defeated the Knights (2-9-1, 1-6 AAC) 3-0 for their third conference win and fifth shutout of the season.

“St. Andrews is always a hard place to go,” Head Coach Rob Miller said. “They have a talented team and a great coaching staff. We knew it was a must win game and the boys dealt well with the pressure. We scored three very good goals and the back line didn’t allow for many chances against a great front line that St. Andrews has.”

In the first half, Trevor Fick placed a perfect through ball for Austin Manzo who took a left foot strike. St. Andrews’ keeper got a fingertip on it as it went into the upper right corner of the net. The second half saw two more goals by TMU. Joao Costa gave Victor Clemente the ball at the top of the 18 which led to Clemente’s second goal of the season as he shot through a lot of traffic in the box into the bottom right corner netting (2-0).

Costa finished off the scoring for TMU after Jaime Ortega found his feet. Costa quickly counter attacked which led to one versus one with the keeper and Costa sent the ball to the bottom left corner for his 13th goal of the season (3-0).

Up next, the Bears will return to the TMU Soccer Complex for two straight nonconference matchups. First on the schedule is Georgia Gwinnett College on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 1:00 p.m.
