(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Education has approved a tentative budget for next year that will include a one time pay raise for all school system employees of 2.5 percent. The board last night discussed last minute items for the budget and following the recommendation from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson unanimously approved the budget that calls for $53-point 7 million dollars in expenditures.
Superintendent Wilson said they continue to deal with tax dollars lost from the senior exemption and that along with some increase operating cost will require a ½ mill increase in school system tax millage.
According to Wilson even with the millage increase they will be a shortfall in the budget of $145,000 that they will have to find ways to make it work.
Board of Education Chair Kendyl Brock Hunter said, the proposed budget will be advertised and public hearings will be held prior to the final approval by the board.
Perhaps the White County school system is in need of some more sales tax revenue rather than relying so heavily on property taxes. It’s time to spread that burden around a little more.
I agree
Sales tax would get the non-property owners. My school tax is unreal, for what the schools are produceing TODAY. Find another way to raise the money. Owners are fed-up with the boards increases!!!! Time to STOP the BS penality on pro
perty owners!!!!
The next time the splost comes up for renewal, rename it the Education tax and use it to help
operate the school system. That way, everyone helps pay for education, not just the property owners.
This Supt. of Schools was against the senior exemption as it was being looked at by the Board of Commissioners and continues to do so. At what point does the Board of Education and the BOC tell him to get over it, it passed and should not be used as the cause of the funding shortfall. Several surrounding jurisdictions have this same provision but you don’t see the Supt. of Schools bemoaning this exemption. Move on Jeff.
We need to vote I agree should come from sales tax they voted on splots why can’t we vote for sales tax all these new business coming in let everyone share the burden.
