DAHLONEGA – The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team suffered its first defeat of the season Sundayafternoon against Coker, falling 3-2, but the Nighthawks quickly responded, beating Tusculum, 7-0, in the final game of the 2018 Captain D’s Surf ‘N Turf Classic.

GAME ONE
Coker scored all three runs in the fifth inning, sending seven batters to the plate and scoring off two hits and a North Georgia error.

The Nighthawks answered in the sixth after a leadoff walk led to a Sydney Sprague two-run homer to cut the lead to one. North Georgia got two runners on with two outs in the seventh, but the Cobras got out of the jam to earn the win.

Riley Patton was saddled with the loss for UNG while Christine Carver struck out 12 Nighthawks en route to the win.

GAME TWO
The offense started in the top of the first inning for North Georgia as Shelby Hammontree doubled to score Kaylyn Anthonyand give UNG a 1-0 lead. Both teams held their ground until the fifth inning when Sprague hit her second homer of the day, a solo shot to double the Nighthawk lead.

After an Alishia Frierson homer in the sixth, the floodgates opened in the seventh for North Georgia as they plated four runs off four hits and four Tusculum errors to get to the final score.

Kylee Smith remained perfect for the Nighthawks, earning her 11th win of the season by striking out 13 Pioneers.

NOTES
– Sprague ended the day with just the two homers at the plate, going 2-for-7.

– Coker defeated Flagler in the first game of the day, 2-1. The Saints lost to Tusculum as well, 3-1, in the second game of the day.

The Nighthawks will host Lee in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
