Mrs. Thelma Jean Townley, age 93, of Dahlonega, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024. She was born in Wales on May 22, 1930, to the late George Alfred William and Hilora Barnes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Lionel Barnes and Chris Barnes.

Mrs. Townley led a remarkable life of service and dedication. She served with distinction in the Women’s Royal English Naval Service from 1946 to 1953, embodying the values of duty and patriotism. Her commitment to service continued throughout her career, where she retired as a mailroom/messenger supervisor. She was also known for her culinary talents, having worked as a cook, delighting many with her culinary creations.

In 1957, Mrs. Townley realized her dream of becoming a U.S. citizen, a testament to her enduring spirit and love for her adopted country. She settled in Jacinto City, Texas, where she lovingly raised her two sons, Charles William Jones III and John Robert Jones. She took great pride in their accomplishments, seeing them both graduate from high school and later from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Mrs. Townley is survived by her devoted sons, Charles William Jones III (Debbie) of Dahlonega and John Robert Jones (Erendira) of Katy, Texas.

A private memorial service to honor Mrs. Thelma Jean Townley’s life will be held in Houston, Texas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the NGHS Foundation/Hospice at 2150 Limestone Parkway, Gainesville, GA 30501.
