Mildred was born in Hall County, GA on August 29, 1932 to the late Homer Joseph and Susan Mae Marshall England. Following her graduation from Lyman Hall High School, she attended and graduated from Truett McConnell College, where she met her husband Robert Lawson Ables, Sr. After college, Mildred served as a missionary for the Home Mission Board in New Mexico and later attended the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing to graduate as a Registered Nurse. She worked in several areas of the Nursing profession including labor and delivery, nursery and public health nurse. She felt a strong calling to inspire future generations of nurses and taught many years at Brenau College as a nursing professor. While there, she also served as Dean of the Hall County School of Nursing. Mildred touched the lives of many future generations of nurses during her extensive career.

Mildred was a member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, GA. She adored her church family as well as her children, grandchildren and extended family. Mildred and Bob loved bringing family and friends together by hosting barbecues at their mountain home. After retiring they enjoyed traveling, painting and reading. Her primary reading was her daily devotional which she practiced each morning. Mildred was an amazing person – smart, very spiritual, always kind, and a true southern, Christian lady, loved by many.
