Mr. Graeme “Rabbit” John Bartils, age 80, passed away on February 2, 2024. He was born on December 20, 1943, in Melbourne, Australia, to the late Jack and Millie Revelle Bartils, Rabbit’s journey through life was marked by a passion for family and a love for the thrill of racing.
Rabbit’s racing career took him across the globe, working with renowned teams and leaving an indelible mark on the world of motorsports. From his time with Lotus racing in England and McLaren Racing in Formula One, to Indy Car racing with legends like AJ Foyt, Tom Klausler, and Loyd Ruby, Rabbit’s expertise and dedication were unmatched. His venture into NASCAR saw collaborations with icons such as Bill Elliot, Davey Allison, Lucky Compton, Robert Yates, and PJ Jones.
Not one to be confined to the conventional, Rabbit also made his mark in land speed racing, setting several records at Bonneville in the Modified Gas Blown Roadster class, reaching an impressive 219.924MPH. In 1992, he planted roots in Dahlonega and founded “North Georgia Fabrication,” a hub for street rods, race cars, custom suspension, and general fabrication. The shop not only thrived as a business but became a cherished gathering place for friends and racers, where tales of speed and memories were relived.
Rabbit is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marilyn Bartils, son Jeff (Maree) Bartils of Queensland, Australia, and brother Gordon Bartils of Queensland, Australia. Grandchildren Ali Bartils and Josh Bartils, along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives, also survive.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his son, Matthew Bartils.
A celebration of Rabbit’s life will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 4:30 PM at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home in Dahlonega. The Rev. Robin Parr will officiate, and friends are invited to pay their respects from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Marilyn has requested that friends and family write her a card, allowing them to share cherished memories and offer solace during this difficult time. Rabbit’s legacy of speed, skill, and camaraderie will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

I had the honor and privilege of knowing Mr. and Mrs. Bartils. The two were one of love, enthusiasm and pride.
Mr. Bartil’s exploits were never known to me albeit he remarked on a few Bonneville “mishaps”.
His confidence, inner strength and humor never waned during the difficult times and he was always accepting of medical suggestions.
Mr. Bartil’s was a great and loving man and one who will be missed by me particularly.
