Mary Loyce Wheeler passed away on Saturday, October 16 at The Oaks at Hampton
Memory Care Facility with her husband of 62 years and younger granddaughter at her
side. Mary was born July 19, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by
her parents, Emory and Evie Mae Langford and her son, Mark Wheeler.
She is survived and will be lovingly missed by her husband, Charles D Wheeler, whom
she married December 20, 1959 at Brookhaven United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA.
She also leaves two daughters Jane (Mark) Schilling and their children Sam (Savannah)
and Mary Beth, and Susan (Eric) Lynskey and their children, Sarah Jane and Charlie.
She also leaves behind a brother, James (Dottie) Langford along with numerous nieces
and nephews and a sister-in-law, Judy Wheeler Stewart.
Mary attended Chamblee High School, graduating in 1957, after which she attended
LaGrange College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She earned a Master’s
of Education Degree from Georgia State University and taught English at Lakeside High
School in DeKalb County.
A gifted teacher, she also taught Sunday School and Bible Studies at Brookhaven UMC,
Briarcliff UMC and Dahlonega UMC. She was an active member of the United Methodist
Women leading mission studies and reading groups. She had a passion for Christmas
and spearheaded the ShoeBox Ministry through Samaritan’s Purse, packing and
shipping hundreds of Christmas gifts to children in war-torn countries all over the world.
She hosted family and friends at numerous Christmas gatherings displaying beautifully
decorated trees.
Family was at the center of what she and Charles loved – her spirit made travels,
gatherings and sleepovers for the grandkids a special and unique time together.
The service to celebrate the life of Mary Wheeler will be Wednesday, October 20 at
11am at Dahlonega United Methodist Church, 107 S Park Street, Dahlonega, GA 30533

Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Tucker, GA.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 19 from 5pm – 8pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home
20 Gibson Road, Dahlonega 30533.
