Lalla McQueen Stevens West passed away on February 1, 2020 in
Cleveland, GA at age 98.

Mrs. West was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Grady
James West; her son Grady James West, Jr. and grandson, Jason
West; her parents, Lalla McQueen Stevens and McDuffie Stevens; her
brothers Senator James P. Stevens and Thomas Stevens, and sister-
in-law, Madeleine Stevens.

Mrs. West is survived by daughters Ellen West Sanders and Beverly
West Denard; grandchildren Ellen West Gann (Ward), Julie Corinne
Carr and Elizabeth Carr Schaefer (Paul); Corinne West Mikhail (Ray),
James Calvin West (Meagen), and Steven Denard; great
grandchildren Corinne Gann, Lillian Gann, Everett Schaefer, Carter
Mikhail, Silas, Thea and Calvin West; and first cousins Carolyn
Thomas Platt (Nolle) and Robert B. McQueen (Louise).
Mrs. West studied nursing at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, S. C.
before World War II and retired from the State of South Carolina
Employment Security Commission. She was a member of Loris, S. C.
Methodist Church, an inactive member of the Order of Eastern Star, a
pianist at numerous Methodist churches over the years (as one cousin
said, “Lalla could tear up a piano.”), an avid bridge player, a world-
wide traveler until her late 70’s, and enjoyed fishing with her brothers,
husband and son in the Lowcountry rivers of her birth. It was said by
some that she was the best fisherman among them!

The family wishes to express appreciation to the nursing and support
staff at Gateway Rehabilitation, Cleveland, GA for their loving care of
her. Gateway had become her home and community for 9 years.

A private celebration of her life will be held on February 29 in
Cleveland, GA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Horry County Historical
Society, Conway, S. C.
