PEMBROKE, N.C. – Aleah Johnson was the fastest 400 meter runner on day one as the University of North Georgia track & field team began competition in the Peach Belt Conference Championships Thursday at UNCP’s Dick and Lenore Taylor Track.

Johnson ran a 57.26, more than three-tenths faster than the field to qualify as the top runner in the one-lap race. Imani Arnold also ran the eighth-fastest time in the conference meet, clocking a 59.17 race.

In the 1500 meter race, Brittany Truitt ran the second-fastest qualifying time, just four one-hundredths off the top time with a 4:56.65. Emily Sims finished just behind with a 5:00.16 to qualify in fourth.

The Nighthawks brought home their first six points of the meet in the 10,000 meter race with sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes. Maria Coughlin finished sixth in the 25-lap race with a time of 40:34.31, Jenna Sanborn in seventh at 40:37.08 and Olivia Terwilliger in eighth at 40.40.38.

After the first day of competition, UNG is tied with Columbus State for fifth place with six points. UNC Pembroke leads Nova Southeastern by seven points through Thursday’s action.

Tomorrow’s action for North Georgia begins at 2 p.m. with the pole vault. The day is highlighted by the 4×100 meter relay finals at 4:30 p.m. and the 3000 meter steeplechase finals at 5 p.m.
