A Toccoa woman was injured and her male passenger died of injuries in a single-vehicle wreck in Stephens County Sunday night.

At the time of the wreck, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Amanda Renee Combs, 26, of Toccoa and formerly of Cleveland, was traveling north on Ga. 17 Alternate (Talmadge Drive), according to Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

The Jeep failed to negotiate a curve to the left and ran off the road to the right, according to GSP. The vehicle traveled approximately 207 feet before re-entering the roadway, then traveled across the southbound travel lane and exited the left shoulder of Ga. 17 Alternate near mile marker 8.

The Jeep struck an embankment with its left front and traveled up the embankment before striking several trees. The vehicle overturned and rolled down the embankment coming to a final rest on its roof facing north on the left shoulder of Ga. 17 Alternate.

An unidentified male passenger in the vehicle died of injuries suffered in the wreck, according to GSP. Once his identity is confirmed it will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Neither occupant was restrained, according to GSP.

The wreck was reported by a passerby just before 10 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is conducting an independent investigation of the crash.
