(Cleveland)- White County’s first positive rabies case for 2020 has been reported. Sean Sullivan White County Environmental Health Manager said two dogs had contact recently with a rabid skunk in the Hooper Road area of the county.

According to Sullivan the homeowners came home at approximately 10:30 pm Sunday and noticed that one of their dogs smelled strongly of skunk. Upon investigation, they found the skunk had gotten into their fenced in the back yard and was chasing their other dog.

The husband was able to shoot the skunk and it was reported the next morning to White County Environmental Health. Sullivan said the skunk was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur.

White County Environmental Health was advised Thursday that the skunk tested positive for rabies. Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid skunk was located.
