(Cleveland)- A Clarkesville man died in a White county single-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon. 

The accident was reported at 1:25 PM to White County Dispatch on Georgia Highway 356 at Marks Drive.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated the accident and according to Sergeant First Class Auston Allen, Post 6 Gainesville of the Georgia State Patrol, the investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Mr. Lewis Raia, 82 years of age, of Clarkesville, was traveling east on Ga 356 when, for unknown reasons, he traveled off of the north shoulder of the roadway.

According to Allen upon exiting the roadway, the vehicle rotated clockwise and struck a large tree with the left side of the vehicle.

Mr. Raia was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a contributing factor in this crash. Sgt. Allen said  Raia was pronounced deceased at the scene by the White County Coroner’s Office.
