DAHLONEGA – Renee VanHorn became the all-time leader in penalties made in a career in the 58th minute as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Anderson Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex.
Taylor Malasek had two great opportunities to score in the first half, but both hit off the crossbar and the game went scoreless through 45 minutes. In the 57th minute, Malasek made another great run into the box and was dragged down from behind, giving UNG a penalty kick.
VanHorn calmly stood over the ball and sent it right of the Trojan goalie to give North Georgia a 1-0 lead. As time was winding down, the Nighthawks put together one more push at goal, starting with Dani Shartouny’s run down the right side of the attacking third. She forced the AU keeper off her line, leaving Daizah Patterson wide open in front of an empty net to give UNG an insurance goal and the final score.
NOTES
– VanHorn passes Sophia Matonak for the most penalties in her career. The senior is a perfect 4-4 in penalties in her time in a Nighthawk uniform.
– Hannah Goudy needed to make just one save as the defense held Anderson to just five shots, recording the first clean sheet of the season.
– VanHorn now leads the Peach Belt in goals scored with three in two matches.

The Nighthawks will host Lee University on Thursday, September 6, to close out the season opening three-game homestand. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the UNG Soccer Complex.
