CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team swept their Saturday opponents at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, winning 6-3 over Hillsdale before a 1-0 thriller against Azuza Pacific.

GAME ONE – UNG 6, HC 3
UNG scored first on a Marley Stowers RBI single in the second that plated Alishia Frierson and put the Nighthawks up early. Katie Collins doubled the lead two innings later on a solo blast in the fourth to push the score to 2-0.

The Nighthawks then scored three runs in the sixth, two coming off RBI doubles from Frierson and Olivia Sinquefieldbefore the final Nighthawk run of the game scored in the seventh off a Kaylyn Anthony RBI single.

Hillsdale was able to plate three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Nighthawk error, but UNG got out of the game to earn the win.

Kylee Smith (4-0) got the win after going five innings of no-hit softball, striking out six and walking two along the way.

GAME TWO – UNG 1, APU 0
The nightcap saw a lot of defense as neither team was able to score until UNG got up in the bottom of the seventh. After Frierson reached base on a dropped third strike, Kelly Kahlert came in to run and advanced to second on a passed ball.

From there, Collins hit a screamer to the right side that was stopped by the second baseman but a bad throw gave Kahlert the green light to score and end the game with the 1-0 win.

Laken Chambers (2-1) earned the win, giving up just two hits in a complete game effort. The sophomore did not give up a hit after the second inning of play.
