HEMC_EV8-28-14(Clarkesville)- Habersham Electric has recently added two new Hybrid Electric Vehicles to their fleet. You may have seen these unique looking vehicles around town, A Ford C-Max and a Chevy Volt.  Tim Dean, Engineering Technician at HEMC said, both of these vehicles are not only colorful, but they are also environmentally friendly, “they are electric and run on gasoline as well, so there’s no worry of running out of power with them they switch over to gasoline engine. They use  40-60 percent less gas than conventional  vehicle.”

According to  Dean these type vehicles are becoming more common, “ it’s a growing market, we’re beginning to see more and more of them, with gas prices rising and as battery technology is getting much better, the price are beginning to come down, so these vehicles are starting to  be   more affordable to the average person,” he said.

The annual operating cost for the two vehicles from Cornelia to the HEMC office in Clarkesville is about $250, that compares to just over $1,100 for a large SUV.  Dean noted that employees who have driven the vehicles like them,  Dean  said, “ it is a little bit different from  a regular car,  in that it is  so quiet, other than that it’s like driving any other car.”

The vehicles were added to the fleet to be used for transportation to meetings, visits with consumers and other business functions
