Dr. Laurie Burkett , White County Superintendent of Schools

(ATLANTA) — Now that Governor Kemp has announced that preschool and K-12 school employees, will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in Georgia starting March 8th White County Schools are working on plans to give all teachers the opportunity to be vaccinated.

During a White County Board of Education Meeting, Thursday night Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laurie Burkett said, they have been communicating with Cindy King, Nurse Manager for White County Health Department and they are ready to implement a plan.

“ The majority of our school nurses have gone through the program and Cindy has signed off on them so they will be able to give the vaccine, so we anticipate using our school nurses as well,” said Burkett.

Burkett said she feels around 80 percent of the teachers will take advantage of the vaccine.

Burkett said as for COVID-19 cases within the school system the latest numbers are low but she expects that to increase next week which is a couple of weeks following the winter break.

Gov. Kemp made the announcement Thursday, saying newly eligible people can start signing up today.
