White County Senior Center Volunteers with White County Commissioners

(Cleveland)- Fifty plus volunteers were recognized Monday by the White County Board of Commissioners for their service as volunteers with the White County Senior Center.

Prior to the meeting at 4:30 PM, the commissioners hosted a reception for the volunteers. Later during the meeting, White County Commission Chairman Travis Turner said, each week, over 150 clients received home-delivered meals. Volunteers deliver to clients on five routes each weekday. In the last year, volunteers have delivered over 29,000 meals to seniors across the county.

Turner also said, “We can count how many meals these volunteers have delivered, but we cannot measure the true impact of their efforts. For many home-bound seniors, the interaction with the volunteers delivering their meal is the brightest part of their day.”  “ For loved ones of these seniors, there is immeasurable assurance and peace of mind knowing that someone is interacting with and provide a meal each day to their family member.”

Turner said, each week, seniors also visit our Senior Center for activities (including Bingo, Ping-Pong Basketball, and Rummikub), fellowship, and a lunchtime meal. Over 7,000 meals have been served at the Senior Center in the last year. And in-person participation continues to grow. Volunteers help to call bingo, manage the thrift store, distribute meals, account for donations, and serve on the Site Council Leadership.

The Senior Center also provides a Respite Program to allow seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia to be in a fun and caring environment while their loved ones take “respite” knowing they are safe. Volunteers help to engage with Respite Program participants by playing games, and providing entertainment, and also volunteers provide snacks. The work of our Senior Center would not be possible if not for the dedication of our volunteers. THANK YOU!!!

“ All in all, the Senior Center has the BEST volunteers in White County, ”  commented Barbara Overton, Director of White County Senior Center.
