(Cleveland)- White County has decided to challenge the results of the 2020 census count.

During this week’s commission meeting County Commission Chairman Travis Turner said they have used the county’s GIS technology as well as residential addresses and thus far have found approximately 2,763 residents that were not counted in the census.

John Sell, County Economic Development Director told the commissioners that back in April 2010 our census was 27,144, July first of 2019 the U.S.  Census estimated our population at 30,798. Sell said, then when the census came out for 2020 it said the population was 28,003 which was 2,795 short of what they estimated in 2019, “ that causes a lot of concern,” said Sell

The county has sent a letter to the census bureau appealing the population results for the county.

Commissioner Turner said there are other counties in the state that are looking at doing what we are because of the low counts in their area. “We feel like we have a good case”, said Turner.

Sell said they hope to hear back from the Census bureau within 90 days, but he said they have until 2023 to respond.

Commissioner Terry Goodger said, “the biggest effect this will have on us is the money we get from the state and federal government.”
