DAHLONEGA – No. 2 Young Harris scored with six seconds left in regulation and 13 seconds left in double overtime to escape Dahlonega with a 3-2 win over the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team Wednesday night in front of a record attendance at the UNG Soccer Complex.

The Nighthawks struck first as Prince Domafriyie scored in the 16th minute, beating the YHC keeper high above his head to give UNG a 1-0 lead. The score remained that throughout the first half and into the second before Young Harris’s Val Feeney scored just three minutes into the second half to level the score.

North Georgia retook the lead in the 83rd minute as Alex Grant chipped the ball over the goalie after securing a loose ball in the box. The Nighthawks looked to have the game won, but YHC used a corner kick from Dani Fischer to find Kevin Coiffic with just six seconds left in regulation to force overtime with a 2-2 score.

Neither team scored in the first overtime period, but the Mountain Lions got the game winner from Carlos Gomez in the final 13 seconds of the match to escape with the win.

NOTES
– Tonight’s attendance was 1,112, by far exceeding the previous record set last year at 909 fans in attendance. Wednesday served as the men’s soccer Senior Night and Spirit Night.

– UNG took just four shots in the match, scoring on two of them. Young Harris fired 32 shots in the near 110 minutes of play. Matt Sharman made seven saves in between the posts.

– With the win, Young Harris wins the Peach Belt regular season title, while the Nighthawks fall to fifth with one match to play. UNG can still get up to as high as third depending on results around the league on the final day of the regular season.
