AMERICUS, Ga. | The 12th ranked University of North Georgia baseball team scored the eight unanswered runs Sunday afternoon as they swept Georgia Southwestern with an 8-4 win.
The Nighthawks scored in the top of the first on a Trevor Sams RBI single to right field. They scored again in the top of the third as Joshua Profit came across home plate after drawing a leadoff walk.
Leading 2-0 in the fourth, North Georgia doubled its lead starting when Ryan Tomita reached base on a dropped third strike. Three batters later, Tomita scored after Erick Delgado was hit by a 2-2 pitch. Connor Hoover drove home the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
After three innings of scoreless baseball, the Nighthawks doubled their lead again. After two singles and a sacrifice bunt,Devin Gearhart brought the first runner home on a single to right field. On the very next pitch, Sam Tidaback hit his third homerun of the season, plating three more runs to make the score 8-0.
The Hurricanes would score two runs in both the eighth and the ninth innings. XXXX Alderman brought the runs home in the eighth on an RBI double to center field. The two runs for Georgia Southwestern in the ninth came home on wild pitches.
NOTES
– The Nighthawks remain undefeated in Peach Belt play at 3-0. They are 9-2 overall. Georgia Southwestern is now 9-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
– North Georgia has won eight straight and 11 of the last 12 against the Hurricanes, dating back to 2012. It is the second straight sweep of the Hurricanes.
– Daniel McCrary earned the win in relief after going 3.1 innings. He gave up two runs and struck out two.
