Mr. Jerry Wayne Wood, age 78, of Suches passed away Monday, March 22, 2021.

Jerry was born in Calhoun, GA on June 3, 1942 to the late Wayne Milas and Adron Nicholson Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy Lee Wood. Jerry retired from the U.S. Forest Service with many years of dedicated service. Jerry ran heavy equipment and fought fires alongside people whom he considers family. While his early life and career took him many places, Jerry always considered Suches home. Jerry’s knowledge and expertise was instrumental in establishing the Suches Fire and Rescue Volunteer Squad. Jerry and his family helped create and organize the Indian Summer Festival held annually each year to raise funds for Woody Gap Schools.  This year marked his 44 year to which he proudly said he would continue to work until the last “Wood kid” was out of the school. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church.

Retirement also brought Jerry great joy. From hunting and fishing to cutting trees and following the Georgia Bulldogs, he enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Jerry’s favorite title was “Paw”, as his grandchildren affectionately called him. He traveled many miles with them to sports outings from golf to baseball and all in between and was their biggest fan. Jerry will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Missing him most will be his sons and daughters-in-law Dewayne and Tina Wood, Dahlonega, Devin and Ana Wood, Dacula, and Darren and Kelly Wood, Dahlonega; grandchildren Kimber and Cody, Brooklyn and Levi, Morgan and Daniel, Gunner and Annie, Logan and Nina, Easton, Cannon, Cooper, Maria, Felipe and Kacy; great-grandchildren Brighton, Nora, Ronan, Archer, Emmy, and Tate; brother and sister-in-law Larry and Diane Wood, Suches; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Rudy Tribble, the Rev. Terry Head, and the Rev. Kris Butler will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
