(Dahlonega)- More details are emerging about the early-morning incident that resulted in the death of a Lumpkin County man during his arrest.

Just after 7:15 a.m. Tuesday two  White County Sheriff’s Office personnel attempted to serve a bench warrant on Roy Carr at 1036 Rock House Road near Dahlonega.

White County Chief Deputy Bob Ingram said, Carr was being served a bench warrant for failure to appear in court on theft charges in White County.

“Mr. Carr immediately barricaded himself in the residence with his wife and two children and refused to surrender to authorities,” according to a statement issued by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. “Mr. Carr kept coming in and out of the residence with a gun, and was threatening to shoot.”

When White County deputies contacted Lumpkin County Dispatch Center of the incident, multiple Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived at the house about 7:20 a.m.

A short time later, the wife and children were able to leave uninjured, and quickly were removed from the area.

“Shortly after the family members escaped, a single gunshot was heard from inside the residence,” the statement reads. “Several Lumpkin County sheriff’s officers made entry into the residence to render aid if possible or apprehend Mr. Carr. Mr. Carr was located just inside the front door. He was found lying on the floor with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Mr. Carr was already deceased when officers with Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office made entry into the residence.”

At the request of the local agencies, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 8 is investigating the incident.
