(CLEVELAND) – The Truett McConnell University men’s soccer team announced Jose Herrera, a TMU men’s soccer alum, as the new Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach, effective Thursday, July 1. Herrera will work alongside Head Men’s Soccer Coach Scott Borchers.

“I am very excited about Jose joining the program. It is great to have a TMU alum and former player come back to Truett,” said Coach Borchers. “Jose is driven, hardworking, and passionate about the game. He is passionate about coaching, serving, and discipleship. We are excited to get going!”

Between 2005-2007, Herrera played two years under Coach Borchers at Truett McConnell when the university was a junior college, and concluded his athletic career at the University of North Georgia from 2007-2009, where he graduated with his bachelor’s in Criminal Justice.

The UNG alum began his career coaching club soccer at Lanier Sharks Association in Gainesville, Ga until 2017, followed by an assistant coaching position at Riverside Military Academy from 2020-2021, while holding his USSF C license.

Originally born in Durango, Mexico, Herrera now resides in Jefferson, Ga. with wife Jennifer, who is also a TMU soccer alum. They attend Free Chapel in Jefferson, where he is a leader in the children’s ministry.

“My favorite verse is Colossians 3:23,” Jose said. “It helps me remember that whatever I do, I must do it to the best of my ability to honor God.”
