(Cleveland)- White County Public Works Department advises that Gene Nix Road in the county is now open to through traffic at the bridge following the installation of new guardrails at the bridge.
Rolann Smith, spokeswoman for the county public works said, the crew contracted to install the guardrails stayed late Tuesday to complete the project.
The placement of guardrails at that bridge was prompted following the death of two White County teens on March 15th.
The call for the guardrails gained national attention after the father of one of the teens, Shannon Hamilton was arrested while attempting to place a makeshift barrier where the teens’ car ran off the road into Town Creek.
Smith said, county crews still have to put up bridge signs and do other finishing touches, but that will not impede traffic flow.
The guardrails and other safety features should’ve already been installed when not only this bridge but others bridges like it were built. It could’ve saved not only the teens’ lives but others who were lost as well. It’s sad that it takes the deaths of citizens young or old to incourage what should’ve already been done.
I would have done the same thing as a father ! I think Mr Melton should loose his job over this since the work has been on the books for years and it took a hero of a father to get arrested to make these changes happen !
