(Cleveland)-  White County’s collection of  Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax has been coming in strong for a while and the county commissioners want to explore the possibility of using some extra funds to help pay off the bonds on the county jail early.

During  Monday’s commission meeting Kevin Hamby, the county’s  SPLOST Manager told the commissioners  SPLOST revenue has been coming in good well above the projected estimates and Hamby said the county is expected to have around a million dollars to carry over to next year.

That prompted commission chairman Travis Turner to ask Hamby and the County’s Finance Director Jodi Ligon to come up with  some figure for them to look at, “run us some numbers with our accumulated debt service we set aside each month again the positives and negatives, the pros and cons about utilizing that cash to potentially pay off the jail  a year early, “ said Turner.

The commissioners want to have the information to look at during their next work session.

Turner said, “ because we are not earning anything on our money at the bank right now.”
