Bette Carmel Nisewonger Noggle of Sugar Hill, Georgia passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 19, 2020. Bette was born in Cleveland, Georgia on October 13, 1929 to Benjamin E. and Carmel T. (Thurmond) Nisewonger. She was the first of three children born to Ben and Carmel. To her family and others, Bette was known as Honey.

Survived by: Daughters Melissa with her husband Troy Walden, of College Station, Texas and Christina Noggle of Clayton, Georgia. Grandchildren: Trent Vittrup, along with wife Kendra, of College Station, Texas and Kendall Haynie Vittrup of New York City. Great-grand daughters Rei Leigh and Ellis Paige Vittrup. Brother: Jimmy Nisewonger and wife Sallye. Additionally, she is survived by her cousin Kathryn Westmorland Branton who grew up and remained more as sisters than 1st cousins.

Proceeded in death by: Husband, Luke H. Noggle, Jr., Parents, Rev. Ben and Carmel Nisewonger, and Brother, Ken Nisewonger.

After spending her early childhood in Cleveland, her family moved to Atlanta where she grew up. Even though she was raised in the city, she spent the summers and many weekends in the shadow of Mt. Yonah. Family and friends were everything to the Nisewongers. Their house was always open to visitors and those in need especially the kitchen.

Bette graduated from O’Keefe High School. Her mother’s work ethic passed down to Bette; she was a dedicated employee of Southern Bell and Ford Motor Company.

She married Luke in September of 1949 and worked diligently to put him through college at both the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. She sacrificed some of her dreams to make sure that he could pursue his. Luke’s work took them to Baltimore, Maryland and they settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Luke worked for Westinghouse and Bette made a home with two daughters. After many years of pining to move back “home” to Georgia, Bette and Christina moved to Sugar Hill in 1996.

Bette devoted her life to raising her family and serving others through charity organizations such as Shadyside and Forbes Regional Hospitals where she led volunteer efforts, the Southern Club of Pittsburgh, PEO, Buford Lanier Women’s Club, church circles and garden clubs.

Over the years, Bette has been an avid bridge player, bowling league star, golfer, grand hostess, reader, and puzzle solver.

She was a real friend to many whether she has known you forever or you are the wait staff at a local restaurant. She wanted to know people and encourage them. She was her daughters’ greatest fan and an open ear to anyone that needed one.

A life-long Christian, Bette lived out her faith every day. The foundation of this faith grew in the North Georgia mountains and Loudsville Campmeeting (a unique annual tradition that has lasted close to 200 years where people gather to renew faith and celebrate Jesus). Bette will be laid to rest to across from Campmeeting.

A celebration of Bette’s life will be held at Barrett Funeral Home, 118 North Brooks Street in Cleveland, Georgia, on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 11 AM. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, October 23rd from 5:00-7:00 PM and prior to the service on Saturday from 10-11 AM. A graveside service will be held immediately following the memorial service at Loudsville United Methodist Church Cemetery,1493 GA-75Alt, Cleveland.
