(Cleveland)-White County has received its sixth positive rabies case for this year. Sean Sullivan White County Environmental Health Manager said in a news release several dogs had contact recently with a rabid racoon in the Gene Nix Road area of White County.

The racoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur.  Sullivan said White County Environmental Health was advised Wednesday that the racoon tested positive for rabies.

All of the dogs exposed had a history of rabies vaccinations so a 45-day observational quarantine is required. Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid racoon was located. If you live in this area and have concerns about rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at 706-348-7698 during normal business hours.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies.
