(Cleveland)- Another rabies case has been reported in White County.  The incident occurred on Monday, according to White County Environment Health Manager Sean Sullivan.  He said several people had potential contact recently with a rabid fox in the Mountain Lakes area.

Sullivan said a woman got out of her car and was approaching a residence when the fox came out from underneath a handicap ramp and lunged at her. She backed up but the fox latched onto the victim’s pant leg and would not let go.

Several men nearby heard her yelling and came to help.  The fox was still locked onto the pant leg and one of the men was able to put his boot on the fox’s neck and get it to release.

The fox was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur. White County Environmental Health was advised Wednesday that the fox tested positive for rabies.

All persons involved were told to discuss the incident with their physician and follow his/her advice.

This is the twelfth confirmed case of rabies in White County this year.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid fox was located. If you live in this area and have concerns of rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at  706-348-7698 during normal business hours.
