MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Taylor Malasek scored in the 103rd minute as the University of North Georgia scored a golden goal win over Georgia College, 3-2, in the Peach Belt Conference opener Saturday evening. North Georgia improves to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in PBC play with the win.

Renee VanHorn got the scoring started early, heading home a Brynn Finneran corner kick in the sixth minute. After a Bobcat goal six minutes later, VanHorn found the net again in the 27th minute. Charlotte Rindt passed the ball down the right side to VanHorn, who put the ball in the left side of the net to give the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead.

The game remained at the 2-1 score until the 90th minute when Georgia College sent a ball in from midfield late and was able to find the net to send the game to overtime.

The first overtime period went by scoreless, forcing the second period, where Malasek took a pass from VanHorn and scored the golden goal in the lower left corner.

NOTES
– North Georgia has now played five straight overtime games, four of which went longer then 100 minutes. UNG is 3-0-2 in that stretch.

– VanHorn had her second career two-goal match. Her first came a year ago against USC Aiken.

– The Nighthawks have now won six straight against Georgia College and seven of the last eight.

The Nighthawks will travel to Columbus, Georgia, to take on No. 2 Columbus State on Wednesday, September 20. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. at CSU’s Walden Soccer Complex.
