CLEVELAND, Ga. (Nov. 10, 2018) – Sophomores Myles Monroe and Calvin White combined for a total of 45 points to lead the Truett McConnell University men’s basketball team to their first Appalachian Athletic Conference win against Columbia International University inside the Benjamin F. Brady Arena on Saturday evening (87-76).

The Bears came out slow in the first 20 minutes trailing by as much as 10 points. However, a Jacob Booke 3-pointer enabled TMU to come from behind (30-31) with a minute to go. The Rams put up five more to put them at a six-point advantage going into the half (30-36).

Nonetheless, the Bears came back out in the second half ready to rally. A 3-pointer by junior Darius Thrower put TMU out front for the first time all game (50-49) and the Bears never looked back. In fact, Thrower’s 3-pointer was the second straight by the Bears. It was Filipe Goncalves’ 3-pointer that sparked the late surge.

With 9:07 to go, Christian Davis’ 3-pointer initiated a 13-1 run which ultimately proved to be the difference as the Bears fastened their first conference victory against the Rams (87-76). As a whole TMU drained six 3-pointers in the second half.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“We got off to another slow start, but credit to our guys,” Head Coach Jon Yeh said. “We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and it opened things up. We kept playing hard and the 50-50 balls that CIU was getting in the first half started coming out way in the second half.

Again, Brady Arena was an electric atmosphere. The fans, the band… It really gave us a boost all game long.”

LEADERS

For the second game in a row Monroe led with 20 or more. Monroe scored 24 points, adding six rebounds and four assists. White scored 21 and tallied nine rebounds. Senior Goncalves recorded his first double-double of the year of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Goncalves was also credited six assists. Davis added 12 points.

The Bears will be on the road for a nonconference matchup at Emmanuel College on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:00 p.m., before hosting AAC foe Montreat College on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 4:00 p.m.
