(Cleveland)- Three people were injured in White County Tuesday night as a result of someone using a flammable liquid to burn a brush pile.

White County Public Safety Director David Murphy said in an email,  Tuesday evening at approximately 6:30 PM, White County fire units with automatic aid from the City of Cleveland responded to a reported structure fire at 1135 Stansel Road off Adair Mill Rd.

Murphy said,  “Once on scene, it was determined that is was not a structure fire but a brush pile that was smoldering and a flammable liquid was used; this caused an explosion resulting in burns to two (2) adult males.  Murphy advised a 19 year old male received 2nd– and 3rd degree burns, he was airlifted to Grady Burn Center in Atlanta and was last reported in stable condition.  The name is not being released due to notifications of kin.  Also injured was a 20-year old male, Murphy said he received 1st-2nd degree burns on lower extremities, but refused transport on scene.

Murphy also said an off-duty White County Sheriff’s deputy who lived next door received 1st degree burns to his hand while trying to render aid to the burn victims.

Fire personnel extinguished the brush pile and remained on scene to assist with landing zones and patient care.  Units were on scene for approximately 2 hours.
