Special thanks to Bill Kinsland

(Cleveland)- White County received record snow last Friday and Saturday.  WRWH Weather Reporter Bill Kinsland  after digging through lots of data found that Cleveland DEFINITELY broke it’s all-time record single-day December snowfall….AND…it’s all-time December monthly snowfall totals!

Cleveland’s  weather records go back 74 years to 1943 when Estaline Sutton made the observations.

At  the Sautee weather station the same for its 19-years of record keeping.

Although Helen’s Friday-night snowfall was a record-breaker for December 9th of all years since 1956…other December records were not broken.  Bill said, Friday night’s snowfall of 3.5 inches   was the FOURTH largest single-day December snowfall since Helen’s records began in 1956.

The greatest ever was 5.5 inches recorded on December 3rd, 1971 reported by  Observer C. L. Vandiver.  The second greatest was 4.5 inches recorded on December 14th, 1958 reported by Observer John F. Grear. The third greatest was 4.0 inches recorded on December 12th, 1969 reported by Observer C.L. Vandiver.

“I found no record whatsoever of any snow being recorded at Helen on December 9th in any of its previous 61 years of records,” Bill said,  “so last week’s snowfall was the first ever to be recorded for December 9th.”
