DAHLONEGA – The No. 4 University of North Georgia softball team earned two top 25 wins Sunday, knocking off No. 21 Wingate before beating No. 2 West Florida in their second game of the day at the Captain D’s Surf ‘n Turf Classic.

GAME 1 – UNG 7, Wingate 0
Although the scoreline looks lopsided, this game was tight until the sixth inning. Wingate led off the game with a triple to right center, but Kylee Smith struck out the next three batters to leave the Bulldog stranded 60 feet away. Smith would go on to strike out a total of eight in a row to start the game.

North Georgia scored two in the third on a inside the park homer by Kaylee Womack, plating Olivia Sinquefield on the play to take a 2-0 lead. UNG scored again in the fourth on a Marley Stowers bomb to left field, making the score 3-0.

The Nighthawks then scored four runs in the sixth on a Harlee Williams sacrifice fly, a Kali Turner RBI double and a Sinquefield RBI double.

GAME 2 – UNG 2, West Florida 0
North Georgia scored both runs of the game in the fifth inning, the first coming on a Lexi Duncan RBI double that scored Shelby Hammontree. Duncan came around to score on a Katelyn Perry single coupled with an Argo error.

Abbie Crawford earned the win for the Nighthawks, throwing 5.2 innings of shutout softball. She scattered two hits and two walks while striking out two.

NOTES
– Smith earned the win in game one and the save in game two. She struck out a total of 14 batters on the day, 11 of which came against Wingate.

– Stowers went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored.

– West Florida defeated Wingate, 2-0, in the final game of the day.

The Nighthawks will finish the Captain D’s Classic tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start against Wingate before a 3 p.m. showdown with West Florida.
