DAHLONEGA – With a sweep of Columbus State Wednesday night, the No. 4 University of North Georgia softball team clinched at least a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship for the sixth consecutive year.

GAME 1 – UNG 3, CSU 0
All the scoring happened in the second inning, starting with a leadoff homer from Katie Collins to put the Nighthawks up, 1-0. Cheyanne Mosteller stepped up later in the inning and dropped a suicide squeeze bunt down that plated Lexi Duncanto double the UNG lead.

Kaylyn Anthony brought home the game’s final run the next plate appearance with a sacrifice fly to bring the game to its final score.

Kylee Smith (22-2) threw a one-hitter, striking out nine Cougars along the way.

GAME 2 – UNG 5, CSU 1
North Georgia started again in the second inning as the Nighthawks scored two runs, the first coming on an error before Shelby Hammontree singled to plate Olivia Sinquefield.

After a Cougar sacrifice fly cut the lead in half in the fourth, the Nighthawks got the run right back by scoring on a wild pitch. UNG scored the final two runs of the game in the sixth on a Hammontree triple and a wild pitch.

Smith (23-2) earned the win again, striking out seven more Cougars while scattering three hits throughout the complete game.

NOTES
– The Nighthawks extend their PBC record of consecutive regular season championships by earning a share Wednesday night. North Georgia also clinches the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PBC tournament regardless of the remaining games on the conference schedule due to potential tiebreakers. A win Friday at Georgia College will give the Nighthawks the regular season championship outright.

– Hammontree and Collins each went 2-for-5 in the twinbill to lead the Nighthawks at the plate.
