DAHLONEGA – Marley Stowers blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to help propel the No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team to a 7-1 win over Southern Wesleyan Friday afternoon in the opening game of The Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic.

Kaylyn Anthony scored the game’s first run on a SWU error in the first inning after reaching on a dropped third strike. After loading the bases, the Nighthawks got Stowers up to bat and, with a full count, she put the softball well out of the park to push the lead to 5-0.

North Georgia struck again in the fourth inning on an Anthony RBI single that scored Shelby Hammontree before Katelyn Perry tacked on another run in the sixth on a RBI single that plated Adella Carver. The Warriors pushed a run across in the top of the seventh to bring the game to its final score.

NOTES
– Hobby Gregory and Hammontree each had two hits in the game with the former going 2-for-2 in the game. Hammontree’s two hits were both doubles.

– Kylee Smith (5-0) earned the win in five innings of one-hit softball. She struck out seven along the way as well.

North Georgia will play two games tomorrow in The Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic, taking on Southern Wesleyan at noon before a 4 p.m. matchup with McKendree.
