DAHLONEGA – Tim Kiehl needed a third-set tiebreak at No. 1 singles, but the No. 18 University of North Georgia men’s tennis team was able to defeat Carson-Newman in straight sets across the board in a 9-0 home opening win Sundayafternoon at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park.

Zack Waldow and Kevin Candido got things started at No. 2 doubles with a quick 8-2 win before the other two doubles teams for UNG earned wins of their own.

After Niklas Zielen made quick work at No. 2 doubles, winning his match, giving up just one game, Waldow and Carl Bedrot finished their matches, defeating their opponents by nearly identical scores.

Kiehl had the toughest match of the afternoon. After a 6-3 opening set win, the freshman lost the second set, 6-2, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. Kiehl and Gabriel Dabdab went back-and-forth before Kiehl finally pulled away for the 10-7 win. Shortly after, Jared Bones and Candido finished off their opponents for the clean sweep.

The Nighthawks will next take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, February 21, in Dahlonega. First serve from the UNG Tennis Complex is set for 1 p.m.
