No. 17 TMU Lady Bears take down Point for second straight AAC sweep

CLEVELAND, Ga. (March 12, 2019) – The No. 17 Truett McConnell University softball team swept their second straight Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday night at the TMU Softball Complex (7-2, 2-1). The Lady Bears improved to 17-5, 4-0 AAC on the year while the Skyhawks fell to 11-9, 7-5 AAC.

GAME ONE (7-2)

After a scoreless two innings, the Skyhawks were capable of scoring two runs on a couple of walks. However, the Lady Bears responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Sara Sullivan’ssacrifice squeeze bunt scored Macey Dunaway for TMU’s first run of the day but it was Brie Levy’s double to deep right field that scored the tying run (2-2).

The Lady Bears scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth which featured pinch hitter Sarah Wills singling deep down the left field line to further put the game out of reach for the Skyhawks.

LEADERS

Jaden Morrison led going perfect at the plate (3-for-3) while Dunaway followed going 2-for-3.

Junior Bethany Hyde earned her seventh win after throwing all seven innings allowing four hits and striking out five.

GAME TWO (2-1) | PITCHERS’ DUEL

Seven strikeouts were recorded throughout the first three innings on both ends as both teams struggled to get on base. However, Briley Lawson blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence on a 0-0 count (2-0), which was Lawson’s third home run of her freshman campaign.

Point was capable of running home once in the top of the sixth but it proved not enough. In fact, sophomore Karley Hobbs went on to strike out Point’s final batter in the top of the seventh to further secure the sweep.

LEADERS

Kaitlynn Johnson, Sullivan, Lawson and Peyton Wilson all tallied a hit apiece.

Hobbs remained perfect on the mound (10-0) after allowing five hits, striking out six and walking one over the course of seven innings. This win marked Hobbs’ third straight complete game win.

UP NEXT

The Lady Bears will host another AAC foe, Bryan College, on Saturday, March 16, at 1:00 p.m.
