Sports – White County senior Nix Burkett has proven to be a “ball-hawk” on defense, and the senior was recognized Friday as the BLITZ Football first ever Defensive Player of the Month, according to an email from Blitz Sports.

Nix BurkettNix Burkett has had a stellar senior season so far. Through the first 4 weeks of the season, he has racked up 30 tackles, an interception, and forced a fumble. Burkett has anchored the secondary for the Warriors, who are 2-1 on the season entering Week 5.

Coaches were asked to nominate a player, and nominees are gathered from each team in the coverage area during the season. Burkett won the public vote for the award with a whopping 10,000 votes of the total 36,198. 

Many others showed well in voting, including Union County’s Sloan Sutton (8,228), Banks County’s Jace Bennett (6,283), Habersham’s Tanner Wade (3,749), and Dawson’s Riley Herndon (2,555).

Burkett is the first of what will be three such winners in 2019.
